This female adder (Vipera berus) had moved around in the enclosure, before settling down to bask in the warmest spot. I don't know how sensitive snakes are to the approach of small insects, but I watched, with interest, as an ant tried to climb onto the adder; it failed, and the adder seemed not to notice. The ant is just visible, on the ground, behind the adder's head.
