NT0683 : Limekiln Drawhole

taken 14 years ago, near to Charlestown, Fife, Scotland

Limekiln Drawhole
Limekiln Drawhole
The kilns were 9m (30ft) high, open at the top and with up to three drawholes at the base: These were used to draw off the quicklime and also to control combustion by regulating the airflow - They originally had iron doors as shown in NT0683 : Lime Kiln Door. The kilns were fed a mixture of limestone and coke from the top and burned continuously.
