Long-eared Owl at the British Wildlife Centre, Newchapel, Surrey
"Archimedes", a long-eared owl (Asio otus), is not yet fully grown. He was hand-reared at the wildlife centre; training for display purposes has to start at a very young age, as owls are not very intelligent. Note the head tufts, which give the owl its name, although the ears are at the side of the head. He was extremely vocal, whilst awaiting his turn to fly in the afternoon display.
