TL7182 : Lakenheath St Mary’s church

Lakenheath St Mary’s church
There is much of interest here. The building was started in the 13th century. H. Munro Cautley believes that at the west of the tower there is a 16th century Galilee porch, above which was possibly a guild chapel. The font is 13th century and is regarded as the best in the county. It is certainly a very impressive heavily carved bowl sitting on eight columns, crowned by a superb cover. Probably the most unusual thing visitors are likely to see are the bench end carvings. Some are very risqué; all are carefully executed. The leopard and the mirror, and the circle of life are the most unusual. The 14th century wall paintings on the north arcade are superb. Look up at the magnificent roof and admire the craftsmanship that went into its construction. There is much more to see in this splendid church.
