Syleham St Margaret’s church
A long muddy path leads down into the bottom of the Waveney Valley, where we find this charming little church. As I approached on a Sunday morning, the congregation started to file out of the door. There were six cars in the car park and eight in the congregation, plus the vicar. The lower part of the tower is Saxon, as is much of the church. It was here in this very church, (then quite new) that Baron Bigod met with Henry II in 1172 and swore submission to him and surrendered his two castles of Framlingham and Bungay. Inside the south porch, the doorway has shields around the jambs. The base of the font is 12th century and has volutes on the corners, with signs of an inscription round the base. The very plain font and shaft is later. The conical font cover is dated 1667. The 13th century chancel has a contemporary piscina.
