This is a glorious example of a grotesque with a penchant for human flesh. This one is having more success than his companion on the south side ST9057 : Grotesque, Church of St Mary the Virgin, Steeple Ashton
The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Steeple Ashton

written by Brian Robert Marshall

The late 15th century church is listed Grade I LinkExternal link and is a remarkably large church for a relatively small village. It has been described as a 'wool' church since the wealth created by the wool industry in these parts helped pay for it. It is graced by several grotesques some of which have been restored.
