By mid October, the red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) have started to look a little plump. They have to gain at least 10% of their body weight, if they are to have a good chance of surviving the winter. In the wild, food may be scarce during the winter months; at least, at the British Wildlife Centre, they will be fed every day!

In recent weeks, the squirrels have spent much more time on the ground, foraging for food. This squirrel has found a hazelnut, which he probably buried earlier in the day. Squirrels scent mark the ground, enabling them to more easily find food which they have buried. I read that they are able to remember up to 300 burial locations.
