The viaduct carries the West Highland Line which is run by ScotRail and starts at Glasgow Queen Street connecting Fort William and Mallaig. The viaduct overlooks Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument. The bridge was built in 1899-1901 by Sir Robert (concrete Bob) McAlpine, It was one of the largest civil engineering projects involving poured concrete.

The viaduct has appeared in TV series Charlotte Gray, Monarch of the Glen and The Stone Of Destiny; also films, notably Harry Potter including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (in one sequence the Hogwarts Express is crossing the viaduct), The Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblets of Fire.

In 2007 the Bank Of Scotland issued bank notes depicting Scottish engineering; on the £10 note was Glenfinnan Viaduct.
