The two engines were installed in 1894 to pump sewage two miles to Milton treatment plant. The two pumps are downstairs along with the condenser. The fly wheels don't rotate like you would expect, they rotate back and forth like a mini beam engine. Each engine is a compound, one large (LP) and one small (HP) cylinder. It also has some complicated valve mechanisms TL4659 : Cambridge Museum of Technology - The Steam Man.
