Number 10
Two shirt-sleeved policemen on duty outside the famous black-painted door of number 10 Downing Street; residence of Edward Heath (Prime Minister at the time). When this was taken, it was still possible for a member of the public to stroll past taking photographs without anyone getting suspicious. It was also used as a convenient 'cut through' from Whitehall to St James's Park. Nowadays, members of the public cannot access Downing Street since the right of way was removed and large, black, steel gates (see TQ3079 : Downing Street Security Gates) were erected at its entrance to protect the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, from the threat of a possible terrorist attack.
