Rusty Winding gear, Haytor Quarry
Rusty Winding gear, Haytor Quarry
Rusty winding gear at the bottom of Haytor Quarry. The quarry was opened around 1820 and has supplied stone for many well known London landmarks. Abandoned at the turn of the 19th century, the quarry was opened again for the last time in 1919 when stone was taken for the Exeter War Memorial. The winding gear probably dates from this period.
