The Henly Gate, Carrickfergus

Prospect House was built for Alderman Henry Ellis some time before 1767. A listed building, it was, in fairly recent times, damaged by fire and has not been restored. During WWII the house and grounds were requisitioned for military use. After the liberation of Belgium, the Belgian army trained there. The Henley Gate, on the Woodburn Road, dates from the 1920’s when it was built as a birthday present for one of the occupants. A memorial was dedicated on 5 November 2006 commemorating the presence of the Belgian army.
