TL1990 : A fen blow across Hod Fen Drove

taken 13 years ago, near to Yaxley, Cambridgeshire, England

A fen blow across Hod Fen Drove
A fen blow across Hod Fen Drove
A blizzard of peat soil being driven along by a stiff westerly wind.
A benign dry March has left the peat fens vulnerable to blowing. The dried out surface is whipped along by the wind and is fundamentally soil erosion. Steps are taken to mitigate the chances of this happening by drilling cover crops early in the year but this does not suit all crops. Sugar beet is most at risk as the young seedlings can be bruised or severed. Therefore the expense of drilling the crop again has to be gone through again.
Yaxley is the village in the distance.
