Saxstead Green Postmill

Saxstead Green mill is a 3 storey post mill in the care of English Heritage.
It dates from at least 1796; after tailwind damage c1853 the roundhouse was raised (3rd time) and modernised with cast iron machinery (brake wheel is oak) by Whitmore and Binyon in 1854. The raising was to accommodate two extra engine driven stones as well as other machines like flour dressers. The engine was at first steam but later oil. The mill ceased working commercially on the death of the last miller in 1947.
The site has been conserved, the patent sails still turn but the stone nuts are not connected to the spur wheel.
