Ranworth St Helen's Church

The present medieval church dates to 1450 and is on the site of a previous church. The building attracts up to 100,000 visitors a year due to several reasons. Firstly location; it is in the middle of the Norfolk broads national park, close by are Malthouse broad and Ranworth broad national nature reserves. Many boaters come here for the facilities. The church is a short walk away from the moorings. Inside the visitor is greeted with gifts and literature for sale as well as the nice 13th C font. To the left is a doorway, this leads to the tower which is accessible, a rare feature in today's churches. When climbed it gives a magnificent view. Back down another treasure is found under a green cloth and bullet proof glass. The antiphoner from Langley Abbey is a book of richly decorated religious texts from 1478. When built wool money meant a richly decorated church, much was lost in the reformation but the rood screen is one of the best in the UK. All this and a tea room/visitor centre means this church is hard to beat for features of interest.
