Quintain at Offham
Offham claims to have the last remaining example of a quintain in the country. In former times, the lord of the manor had the duty of maintaining the quintain, or tilting post, in good repair, but nowadays that responsibility lies with the Parish Council. The quintain was used as part of a tournament sport called "tilting the ring", in which horsemen had to strike the flat end of the quintain with a lance, causing the arm of the quintain to revolve, and ride on as quickly as possible to avoid being hit by the heavy weight which would be hung from the opposite end of the arm. The expression "at full tilt" comes from this sport.
