NS3775 : The former site of Havock Farm

taken 13 years ago, near to Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

The former site of Havock Farm
The former site of Havock Farm
The buildings of the farm were located in the area near the centre of the photograph where there are now trees.

The farm was recorded as "Heuack" on the Pont/Blaeu map, which was based on surveys in the 1580s-90s. The first-edition OS map (c.1860) shows "Havock". Although the farm disappeared long ago, its name is still associated with this area beside the River Clyde. The similarity to the English word "havoc" is accidental, but is probably responsible for that spelling of the name becoming more common in recent times.
