I arrived around 20 minutes before the mill was started, once it was going the sails were fully shut to make most of the wind. To the left of the bottom sail can be seen the pulley for external engine drive.
Wicken Windmill

Wicken windmill is a preserved 12 sided smock mill in the Cambridgeshire village of Wicken. It is not to be confused with the nearby wind pump TL5670 : Wicken Fen windpump.
This example was built in 1813, grinding corn for bread and for animal feed. With the slow decay of small scale milling from 1914 Wicken because disused by 1930. After years of rot enthusiasts restored the building to its present working state. There are two pairs of working stones (once three) along with flour dresser and all the usual mill machinery. Access and photography is excellent. Archive LinkExternal link
