Castles of Leinster: Ballymooney, Offaly
This stronghouse southeast of Birr was built c.1622 by Daniel O'Carroll who was transplanted to Co. Mayo in 1657 after the war of 1641 when he was described as "Marshall for the rebels". Just visible to the left and centre under encroaching ivy are the circular SE and NE flankers of the bawn, with the remainder being two wings and parts of the south facade of the main house.
