Castles of Leinster: Athlumney, Meath (1)
This 100 foot long early C17 mansion in the town of Navan on the east bank of the Boyne has mullion and transom windows on three levels, and a C15 tower built by the Dowdall family projecting from the east side. The tower was considerably enlarged around 1630 by the addition of the long and narrow gabled mansion. The tower's four corner turrets are all of different sizes and degrees of projection from the main body of the four storey block. In 1649 the Maguires who were then occupying the castle set fire to it rather than let it fall into the hands of the opposing Cromwellian forces.
