These are the fragmentary remains of a former Mountgarret-Butler five storey stronghouse that was destroyed in 1650, although extensive sections of the western parts of the bawn wall still remain to the north. The remaining southwest end wall of the castle makes for a dramatic ruin with the substantial piece of stonework in the centre appearing to defy gravity. Easily visible from the roadside (country road) northwest of Freshford.
