NG8139 : Deep-water construction dock

taken 13 years ago, near to Ardarroch, Highland, Scotland

Deep-water construction dock
Deep-water construction dock
This dock was quarried out of the hillside to provide a dry dock where oilfield structures could be built and floated out on a high tide. The dock has a depth of 80m, enabling construction of extremely large structures (including the 600,000-tonne Ninian Central oil storage facility).

In the foreground is a survey station, presumably used in construction of the dock and of its products, and in the background are the Kishorn islands.
