Remains of a lock on the Boyne Navigation near Trim, Co. Meath
The Boyne Navigation was intended to continue upstream from Navan, pass through Trim and connect to the Royal Canal. The plan never came to fruition, but a short section of canal was built near Trim. It ran downstream along the north bank for 2.3km from about 400m east of Newtown Bridge and can be seen on 19th century OS maps. The only lock on the section is visible on aerial photos as an indentation, but as can be seen from the photo, it has recently been filled in further. Incidentally, the Athboy railway branch line ran east-west through the point I was standing, so it's two long-defunct transport links for the price of one with this one.
