Liverpool Pier Head
For three evenings the On the Waterfront event at Liverpool's Pier Head drew large crowds. At this point many people were enjoying the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra performing Beatles' numbers and film music with Liverpool links on the stage to the left of the photograph. The controversial Pier Head Ferry Terminal building can just be seen on the far left and with the bronze equestrian statue of Edward VII directly ahead. After dark, all eyes were directed towards the iconic Liver Building whose centenary was celebrated with a laser light show depicting 800 years of Liverpool's history. The display, Luminous Flux was created by Czech artists, The Macula and a video can be seen here

The famous Liver Birds, part cormorant, part eagle, which top the domes were designed by Carl Bernard Bartels whose contribution was not recognised for many years. Anti-German feeling following the sinking of the Lusitania in World War I led to Bartels being interned and then forcibly repatriated to Germany. Even his designs were destroyed during World War II after Liverpool suffered heavy bombing by Germany. Bartels died in 1955 but in 2011 he was posthumously made a Citizen of Honour by Liverpool City Council.
