The Callanish Stones of the Isle of Lewis
The Callanish Stones of the Isle of Lewis
This group of local stones near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) is one of 20 prehistoric monumental sites in the vicinity. The stones pictured are mainly a group of 13, standing between 8 and 13 feet tall surrounding a central stone 16 feet high. They are among about 50 stones on this site which form the rough shape of a cross. Excavation indicates that they were first erected some 4000 years ago. Although theories abound, nothing is known of their purpose LinkExternal link
