Ruined church, Movilla Abbey, Newtownards (2)
The interior of the roofless ruin was used for burials.
Movilla Abbey, Newtownards
The site dates back to the 6th century and a monastery founded by St Finian. It was attacked and plundered by the Vikings in the 9th century before being re-founded in the 12th century as an Augustinian Abbey.
The ruined church is of 13th century origin, rebuilt in the 15th century. The grounds include a graveyard in use until very recent times.
Now, unfortunately, surrounded by suburban housing.
