Pedestal of the former Carlisle Statue, Phoenix Park, Dublin

This part of Phoenix Park is known as The People's Garden. The statue of George William Frederick Howard, Seventh Earl of Carlisle and at one time Chief Secretary of Ireland, was erected here, and unveiled on the 3rd March 1870. It was eight foot high, made of bronze by John Henry Foley, and showed the Earl in the robes of the Order of St. Patrick. In the early hours of the 28th July 1956 the statue was blown up by the I.R.A.

During all or part of the time the statue existed, there was a hard surfaced area around it, with an outward facing seat adjacent to each side of the pedestal. Today the pedestal survives. It is made of granite with polished marble plaques on each side. Two of these have inscriptions. The planting of the attractive flower beds around the pedestal is a fairly recent development.
