Information from the Saoirse website:
Liam “Sonny” McCarthy was born in Tralee on the 26th of March 1895. He first joined the Irish Volunteers in 1918 and eventually became Intelligence Officer for north Kerry. He worked as an organizer for the Kerry Farmers Union, which was good cover for gathering intelligence for the Republican Movement. On the 25th of July 1920 he took part in an ambush near his home in Lixnaw, where two RIC constables were wounded. He joined the flying column in north Kerry and became Adjutant of the Third Battalion, Kerry No. 1 Brigade. On the 24th of March 1921, at Tralee train station he was captured by the Black and Tans. After being questioned at the RIC barracks he was then taken to “the Green” (town park) where he was shot.
