Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park, Dublin
It's probably as well that there never was any actual statue of the Duke of Wellington on this monument, as any such would almost certainly have been removed, by one means or another, many decades ago. The monument is sixty three metres in height. Construction started in 1817. However Wellington fell out of public favour, and enthusiasm for completing the monument declined with it, but eventually it got completed in 1861, over 40 years after it started. Meanwhile the Duke died in 1852, so he never did see the completed monument.
