TQ3980 : East India Dock Entrance Lock

East India Dock Entrance Lock
East India Dock Entrance Lock
The 65' lock built in 1879 and operated by hydraulic machinery supplied by Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth. The capstan in the foreground was hydraulically powered and the various gratings on the ground cover sluice and lock gate operating mechanisms. The gates are opened by jiggers but unfortunately the closely spaced grating and growth of vegetation in the machinery pits make it difficult to see the machinery and practically impossible to photograph. This site was a bit of a disappointment, especially as we rushed to beat the rising tide and then discovered we could see little anyway.
