Standard public house
Site of what was 7 St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, SE16 junction with Clarks Orchard from 1865 until 1873 and which would have stood in line with and behind the Belisha beacon. Believed that the original pub on the site was the 'Crown' from early 1700s until 1783 and this one was previously named 'Anchor and Crown' and the 'Faulcon'. It was in this pub that the Leet Court was held - a medieval court where the Lord of the Manor claimed certain jurisdictional rights concerning his tenants and the administration of his estate. They could not deal with crime. On closure of the pub in 1783 the court was transferred to the 'Europa' pub opposite side of the junction and not automatically retained by the 'Standard'. Leet Courts became obsolete in the 1850s.
