Bricks and sculptures, Castle Espie
The WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre has various artefacts and exhibits from when the site was used as a brick and pottery factory. The brickworks, capable of producing up to 24,000 bricks a day, was opened c1850 but production had totally ceased by 1878/79 and the site was sold in 1885. On display at the site are iron figures depicting some of the jobs that would have been carried out. The piles of bricks have been salvaged from the site - some bear the inscription 'Castle Espie' - see J4967 : Bricks, Castle Espie.
In the background is the Lime Kiln Observatory J4967 : Lime Kiln Observatory, Castle Espie situated on top of the former lime kilns. Sadly the brick kiln, the oldest example of a Hoffman Kiln LinkExternal link in the British Isles, was demolished in the late 1960s.
