Claymills Victorian Pumping Station - boiler house
Claymills Victorian Pumping Station - boiler house
The tops of boilers Nos. 2 to 5. No. 2 is closest to the camera. The dead weight safety valve is to the right and the stand pipe and crown valve are to the left. The crown valves are operated from the walkway over the boilers. Photograph taken during the site warm-up phase when steam is gradually drawn from the boiler and distributed round the site while avoiding thermal and mechanical (water hammer) shocks.

The boilers are the station's second set and were built in 1937 by John Thompson of Wolverhampton. They are typical Lancashire boilers.

The public are only allowed up here as part of special 'hard-hat' tours.
