Wellington monument
In Phoenix Park, Dublin. More correctly known as the 'Wellington Testimonial' it was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Born in Dublin, Wellington, was also known as the 'Iron Duke'.
The Testimonial was designed by the architect Sir Robert Smirke and building it started in 1817. In 1820 construction stopped due to financial problems and it remained unfinished until 18 June 1861 when it was opened to the public.
