Athassel Abbey, or Priory, as it is otherwise known, was founded as an Augustinian priory in the late 12th century, and dedicated to St. Edmund. It lasted until the dissolution of the monasteries, which came to this house in 1537. A small town sprung up around the monastery, but this has long disappeared.
