The mausoleum near Gruline on the Island of Mull, the Macquarie Mausoleum is the burial place of Major General Lachlan Macquarie of Ulva (1761 - 1824), the fifth Governor of New South Wales and 'father of Australia'.
The colony was established in 1788, the first fleet of 11 ships being dispatched under the command of a naval officer Arthur Phillip who became Governor. Subsequent Naval Officers who became Governor were Hunter, King and Bligh (of Munity on the Bounty fame). Bligh got into a lot of trouble when the troops who kept order in this penal colony virtually took control. The British Government decided to appoint an Army Officer and Macquarie arrived in 1809 with his own troops. He was Governor from 1809 to 1821 and has been regarded as highly successful.
