Foredale Cottages
Foredale Cottages
Foredale cottages below Nibble Quarry. Part of old incline visible to right of cottages, upper part obliterated when waste heap was bulldozed following the Aberfan disaster. A stable permeable waste heap was destabilised by creating a dam of fine waste across the mouth to the quarry, the resulting build up of water created a hush* which swept away the community centre and only the ridge of rock saved the cottages.

* Hush/hushing: An archaic (in this country) process used by mineral miners to open up new lodes by directing powerful streams of water along potential ore bodies to remove vegetation and overburden.
