Brian Merriman who lived from about 1747 until 1805, was a schoolmaster and poet. He was born in Ennistymon illegitimately and according to the Cumann Merriman Website, and others, it has been suggested that the natural father was a priest. If so, one could perhaps say that some things never change. As a poet, Merriman's only surviving work of substance is a 1000 line poem called Cúirt An Mheán Oíche (the Midnight Court), which was written in the Irish language. This is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic works of literature, and the greatest comic poem ever written in Ireland. The poem is fairly ribald, satirical and in its themes may be reflecting the circumstances of the poet's own birth. There are many English translations, of which Frank O'Connor's version managed to get itself banned in the Republic under the Censorship of Publications Act in 1946.

This statue stands outside the entrance to Teach Ceoile. The inscription under it can be seen more clearly here:- R1388 : Inscription under the statue of the poet Brian Merriman, Church Street, Ennistymon.
