John Cartwright
Seated bronze statue in Cartwright Gardens of Major James Cartwright (1740-1824) in whose honour Cartwright Gardens is named. He was a distinguished naval officer, soldier and political writer, a vociferous advocate of universal suffrage, anti-slavery, reform and the independence of the United States of America. This statue by George Clarke was erected by public subscription in 1831.
