Market House on the Square at Portaferry
Market House on the Square at Portaferry
This building was built by the Savage family (prominent local landowners) in 1752. During the United Irishmen's Rebellion of 1798 (the local leader being William Steel Dickson the minister of the nearby Presbyterian chapel) the market house was defended by Captain Mathews and a platoon of Anglican yeomen supported by fire from the revenue cutter "Buckingham" moored in Strangford Lough. It now serves as a community centre.
