Robinson's Engine, South Crofty Mine
This is now preserved as part of the Heartlands regeneration project and there are twice daily guided tours of the engine house. The weather was truly awful and I was sheltering in a porch attached to the site's cafe.
The house contains an 80" Cornish beam engine that was built in 1854 by Copperhouse Foundry, Hayle and is now in its fourth location. It was installed here in 1903 and worked until 1955 when it was 101 years old. The white building on the left houses a capstan that was originally steam powered but later ran on compressed air.
