Michell's whim - cylinder
Michell's whim - cylinder
This is the 30" x 9' cylinder of the 1887 double acting rotative beam winding engine by Holman Bros, Camborne. The brick surrounding the cylinder insulation is the only surviving example I can think of but there is photographic evidence of other examples. There are two Cornish drop valves at each end of the cylinder worked via a link motion for reversing. There is also an expansion valve operated by the vertical grey rod on the right.
This engine ceased operation in 1921 and by some miracle has survived has the only in situ example with a beam passing outside the house. There is a small all indoors example at levant.
