The Barretts built the present castle in several phases probably after their purchase of land here in 1458 that probably incorporated parts of the original earlier castle built by Sir Robert Coll. The tower is of four storeys, all vaulted, except at the topmost level. Possession of the castle changed in 1591 when Andrew and William Barrett broke into the castle and expelled their kinsman Edmund Barrett. Sir Walter Coppinger bought it in 1630 after being mortgaged to him by the Barretts. It then changed hands no less than a further three times during the wars of 1641-52, before finally falling to Williamite forces in October 1689.
