A stone in the nearby farmyard bears the date 1579 and the initials of John FitzEdmund FitzGerald which came from the fragmentary range adjacent to the tower. This contains gunloops and a large chimney stack over fireplaces. Cahermone was probably built by John FitzGerald in c.1450, the third son of Maurice, Knight of Kerry. In the 1650s the castle passed to Sir John Broderick.
