TL8814 : Essex Skipper?

taken 12 years ago, near to Tiptree Heath, Essex, England

Essex Skipper?
Essex Skipper?
This skipper was clearly not a student of Linnaean taxonomy as it had refused to neatly comply with human classification. The tips of the antennae of a Small Skipper Thymelicus sylvestris should be distinctly orange while the antennae of the Essex Skipper TL8814 : Tymelicus lineola? should look as if they had been dipped in black ink. You can see that this example on the linked photo had a tiny dot of orange on its substantially black antennae. Members of the Butterfly Conservancy LinkExternal link who were leading today's expedition on TL8714 : Tiptree Heath could not make a positive identification. The reserve is managed by the Friends of Tiptree Heath LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) and the Essex Wildlife Trust LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
