The Great War Memorial Chapel at Burghclere (National Trust)
This was built in 1927 in memory of Lieut Henry Sandham, a casualty of World War I who served in Macedonia with the medical orderly and later Official War Artist, Stanley Spencer of Cookham-on-Thames. Spencer was trained under Henry Tonks at the Slade alongside Paul Nash, Mark Gertler, Claughton Pellew, Christopher Nevinson and the like. The Chapel (Oratory) houses Spencer’s war paintings in which he celebrates, not the battle, but the everyday routine of a soldier’s life with a religious intensity that reaches its triumphant climax in his huge “Resurrection of the Soldiers” above the altar
