Dry Weir near to Crossford Bridge
This is the dry weir, just off Hawthorn Lane & close to Crossford Bridge, built by William Cubbitt in 1841 as a diversionary route for Mersey flood water. Its purpose was to protect the Barfoot aqueduct over the Mersey which carries the Bridgewater Canal. The weir has not been needed since 1915.
As a child, we used to picnic & play here. The area at the bottom the stone weir was dry, sometimes a bit boggy, & we used to climb up & down the stone slope, placing our feet into the footholds, of which there are several. I have not been in this area for many years, & on returning, was surprised to see that it is now permanently full of water.
