“PAUPERS FIELD” on Greenvale Farm
The view is to the north across ‘Paupers Field’ with its trees along the mill stream on the far side. Just visible about a mile away is the village of Aughnamullen. Near Greenvale’s great farmhouse and mill, Paupers Field is where many of the destitute and starving came for help during the Great Potato Famine (known in potato-dependent Ireland as ‘the Great Hunger’). The dreadful years around 1847 of “mass starvation, disease and emigration”, it is said “changed the demographic, political and cultural landscape of Ireland”. For the story of what happened here then, what they came to eat, and of Greenvale Farm over the years LinkExternal link
