Lough Avaghon
Lough Avaghon
This is the north end of the Lough which extends to an area of about 150 acres. From here over the centuries farms to the north have been fed by streams carrying the water down to the Dromore river system three miles away. This water was vital. It worked the farmers’ corn mills and for a time the flax mills of the booming linen industry. It was the subject of frequent disputes, sometimes resulting in the water flow being deliberately blocked. Today only a meagre trickle flows unnoticed through overgrown streams such as at H6715 : Farm waterways: the Mill Stream on Greenvale Farm and H6714 : Farm waterways: Control of Lake outflows
