As the Dromore waters flow away under the bridge, which carries the R188 road out of Cootehill towards Monaghan, it ends a spectacular stretch of the river which for centuries has divided two historic estates - Bellamont on this south side, and Dartrey across on the other (north) bank. The three mile boundary stretch of the river is a gem, described in the 18th century as “A thousand acres of lake...with hills on each side covered with the most beautiful delicious woods, bring all fairyland to one’s imagination”.
Bellamont is privately owned (currently for sale), while Dartrey is owned by the national forestry company (Coillte). An illustrated history and descriptions of these two estates through which this beautiful river runs is at Link
